Music saved the life of Alice In Chains drummer twice

Date: 24 september 2009

AMSTERDAM - Being homeless in 1987 the life of Sean Kinney was saved once he joined Alice In Chains. But drugs soon entered the band and put a heavy strain on each member. The death of lead singer Layne Staley in 2002 seemed to be the end of Alice In Chains.

In 2005 however the band reunited for a benefit concert. They decided to make a comeback with William DuVall as the new lead singer. The album Facelift brought the band it's first succes in 1990 but with the success came the drugs as well.

“It started during the making of our third album Dirt in 1992. Things started working for us musically but quitted working at the same time.” The band members used hard-drugs and “lived a hard life”.

The death of lead singer Layne Staley in 2002 was the tragic flipside of it's succes. “I quitted only a few years a go”, says Kinney who has mixed feelings looking back on the nineties. “We've lived a pretty hard life.”

Kinney is now seriously focused on the band again. “To do this I couldn't be toxic. Half the reason I'm doing this is to take  Layne's legacy and what we created together and move forward with this band.”

The drummer is very pleased with the comeback of Alice In Chains. “I was homeless when we started the band back than and it saved my life in a way. Now, again, music helped me getting my life together. Actually music saved my life twice.”
